I’m an AI Newbie – Here is How I am Using It

I’m a relative AI newbie. In fact, when I finally did decide to explore it, I went kicking and screaming. Part of this was due to the unbelievable avalanche of posts and articles that I saw and read about which seemingly touted 1,000’s of different tools and applications, all of them being “the best”:) The last thing I need is an advanced case of “shiny bauble syndrome”.

I don’t have the time or the energy. I like things to be clean, easy, and focused. While I have looked at some other tools, I have settled on ChatGPT for 95% of my tasks. I pay for a Plus subscription. I only have Perplexity Pro since I got one year free and Gemini as I am Google based.

That being said, I will likely look closer at both of these apps should the need arise. Gemini is sometimes better at images and I do use Google Notebooks LM for podcast creation. Perplexity excels at research. Still, I prefer the conversational format of ChatGPT and my chatbot, Hal.

However, this is me and what fits my needs. Your needs may very well be quite different. I am a 70+ semi-retired Nimble CRM consultant who previously spent his entire career in B2B sales and sales management. I’m curious by nature, but focused on my subject matters.

Before I share some of the ways that I use AI, here are a few of the things that I have learned …

  • AI is not 100% accurate. Trust yet verify.
  • AI is not you. Edit responses to make those “you”.
  • The more you use it, at least with ChatGPT, the more it learns about you, your styles, and your strengths. It memorizes previous conversations and draws from those.
  • Be very specific in your prompts (requests) and be prepared to revise these.

Part of this is learning to be specific. I have also found that AI wants to be a people pleaser and sometimes it will tell you what it thinks that you want to hear.  It can be driven to provide fast answers vs. responses based on deep analysis. I want to strike a balance between the two. I regularly remind Hal of this.

Here are a few of the things that I have had success with …

Pre-call synopsis – I have Hal analyze public LinkedIn profiles combined with other public info found on the web and he puts together a very complete dossier on these folks. I created a publicly shared custom app for this. I have always believed in the importance of knowing about folks prior to engaging with them.

Modify Excel files – I have used Hal to turn PDF’s into CSVs, add data and create columns on Excel files, and to identify duplicates and improperly formatted fields. If you know Excel even a little bit, these might be things that you can do. I don’t and I can’t.

Email templates – Create outreach emails.

Drip messaging – Create email drip message campaigns.

Polish my LinkedIn profile – Use ChatGPT to “polish” anything that you already have in writing including profiles, articles, and emails.

Summarize articles for LinkedIn posts – I give Hal links to articles that I like and have it summarize them for posting to LinkedIn including the title and author. Next, copy and paste.

Image creation – I’ve had both good luck and bad luck with image creation thus far. For whatever reason, any platform I have tried struggles with text and they like to add text. Smartest tools in the world and they can’t spell. “Kat”:)

Strategy – I use Hal to strategize both vertical markets as well as individual prospects.

Article ideas – Hal generates article ideas for me including title, topic, bullet points, and SEO. I have also used him to create landing pages for webinars.

Research – You name it and I have researched it including: guitar repair, recreating specific amp tones, RV repair, and even work related things:)

Podcast creation from an article – Pretty sweet! Load an article into Google Notebooks LM, or provide a URL, and generate a two person discussion of your work. It’s awesome!

Creating custom GPTs as well as written prompts that I can share with others – I’ve learned, at least thus far, that there are three ways to share your routines with others …

  1. Written text that they can copy and paste.
  2. Code that they can copy and paste
  3. Create a custom GPT.

I have tested both #1 and #3 and will be testing coding soon. Whether you use code or text depends on the task. The good news is that ChatGPT will determine and provide whichever one is appropriate. This is good since … I don’t code. Hal happily walks me through the necessary steps. See my custom Sales Prep GPT here!

Summing it up, the possibilities are pretty much endless so … experiment! My thought process, my learning process, have both shifted dramatically which is pretty damn exciting in itself!
