I used to be a terrible procrastinator and the results were often painful including damaging relationships with my clients. I’m not sure what happened or when, but for at least the last 20 years, I’ve done a complete 180.
I am now consumed, and that’s an accurate description, with completing tasks ahead of time. It’s become somewhat of a game with me and I have always been highly competitive. You need to develop a “do it now” vs. “I can do it later” mindset.
The benefits are enormous …
- It’s pretty rare where I do not complete promised assignments to clients well ahead of schedule.
- As a result of this, I am perceived as someone who will consistently exceed customer expectations.
- When something unexpected pops up, and it always does, I am in a great position to handle it, once again, in a timely manner.
Here’s how I do it. My calendar looks out long-term as well as daily. I am constantly reviewing this and juggling tasks (both business and personal) whenever possible. I also maintain a paper steno pad that lists all tasks and appointments for the next two weeks. These generally reflect my “drop dead” dates.
I rewrite this document weekly and I edit it daily. I believe that writing things down is important! Whenever I have free time on my hands, I will go to both of these sources and determine what are the upcoming tasks that I might complete now or, at least, complete partially. Then, I do it!
As I am Google based, all of my files are at my disposal anytime and anywhere. It’s 3 AM and I am writing this article on my iPad while simultaneously binge watching “The Walking Dead” on Netflix. Earlier this morning I was prepping for new clients. I don’t keep traditional business hours and weekends and holidays are just other days to me.
Nothing fancy. I always have time when the unexpected happens or more free time to work on personal projects, honey-do’s, something fun, or to work on, play on, my guitars. All work and no play makes Craig a dull boy:)
